DURING YOUR VISIT
Start with the concern you have.
Describe what has been bothering you and bring your questions. An examination helps guide the discussion about suitable care.
Arrange a dental assessment
Tell the clinic where the discomfort is, when it started and whether it is worsening. The dentist may recommend an examination and imaging to understand the concern.
Does pain mean I need a root canal?
Not necessarily. Root canal treatment is one possible option when the tissues inside a tooth are affected. The right care depends on the findings.
When to seek urgent help
Contact a dentist promptly for severe or worsening pain, swelling or injury. Seek emergency medical care for trouble breathing, speaking or swallowing, eye swelling or vision problems, extensive mouth swelling, or difficulty opening your mouth. Do not wait for a callback.
General patient education. An examination is needed for individual advice. For an explanation of the tissues inside a tooth and root canal treatment, see the American Association of Endodontists’ patient guide.
